**Dallas College Student Shares Journey with Autism and Triumphs in Competition**

DALLAS - Harrison Nguyen, a student at Dallas College, has opened up about his experiences living with autism and the challenges he has faced along his educational journey. Diagnosed with autism, Harrison recalls being told he should be “normal” like other kids, and his family had doubts about his future. After high school, he struggled with depression and faced significant fears related to the judgment of others. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought support from two best friends, which helped him regain his confidence.

Harrison described his high school experience, stating he was placed in special education classes but did not understand the reason behind it, believing he was “normal.” He noted that learning has always been a challenge for him as a slow learner, and social interactions often posed difficulties due to his struggle to connect with others.

At Dallas College, the Accessibility Services have provided essential support for Harrison. He benefits from extra time on tests, extensions on assignments, and assistance in finding suitable classes and professors. He specifically acknowledged Breina Webster from Accessibility Services, who has been pivotal in helping him navigate his academic challenges.

In addition to academic support, Harrison's involvement with SkillsUSA has been transformative. He participated in competitions and achieved a gold medal for his Community Action Project, which aimed to motivate and register young voters. The success of his project, which encouraged over 1,000 people to vote, greatly boosted his confidence and inspired him to engage more in leadership activities.

Looking ahead, Harrison wants to leave a legacy that highlights his perseverance and ability to inspire others. He hopes that people will remember him for his achievements despite struggles and that his story will encourage others to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

Harrison’s journey at Dallas College emphasizes not only the support available to students with unique challenges but also the resilience that can lead to meaningful accomplishments.
