Columbus Recruit Class Completes Live Burn Training

Staff Report / cbuslocal.org

Columbus Recruit class 122 Green Company completed their first live burn training on Monday, November 4th, at the Ohio Fire Academy in Reynoldsburg. The training was conducted alongside veteran firefighters and is part of preparing recruits for their future roles serving the community from one of the 34 Columbus Fire Stations.

During the training, the recruits practiced skills including nozzle control and advancing the hose line. They navigated through the dark areas of a multilevel burn building, maneuvering the hose around tight corners and up and down stairways to reach the burn room. Each recruit took turns in different roles during the scenarios.

Instructor Lt. Derek Kagey commended Green Company for their performance, stating that the training went well overall. This session was particularly meaningful as it was the “Legacy Burn,” where recruits with family members in the fire service could invite them to participate. Recruits Nickolas Bristle, Samuel Foster, and Caleb Cordle were joined by their firefighter fathers, while recruit Trevor Treinish had both his father and brother present.

Mark Foster, Samuel’s father, expressed his pride in his son's decision to pursue a career in firefighting. He noted that Samuel made the choice independently and wished him a long, healthy career. Samuel shared fond memories of visiting the firehouse with his father, highlighting the excitement of attending holiday events. He described becoming a Columbus firefighter as a dream come true.

The next training for 122 Green Company will involve liquid propane and auto fire practices at the Ohio Fire Academy. For those interested in a firefighting career, Columbus Fire Recruitment can be contacted at 614-645-6387, or inquiries can be sent via text by messaging JoinCFD to 888777.
