Cornell Engineers Create Smart Sensor for Cell Viability

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

A team at Cornell University in Ithaca has developed a smart sensor aimed at enhancing biomedical printing and cell therapy. The invention, created by sophomore Jared Matthews in collaboration with Lawrence Bonassar, a professor in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, attaches to the tip of a syringe. This sensor measures the concentration and viability of cells in real-time as they pass through it. The goal of this device is to help surgeons and biomanufacturers produce higher-quality implants of living tissue and even organs.
