Peekskill Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps celebrates 60 years of service

Reviewed by / Peekskillocal.org

On July 1st, 1964, the Peekskill Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps was established in Peekskill, NY by citizens of the community. After months of training, the dedicated group of individuals was ready to care for the citizens of Peekskill.

The first ambulance owned by PCVAC was a 1951 Cadillac purchased for $125 and donated by Mr. Richard French and former Peekskill Fire Chief Charles Olah. Initially parked outside the old Peekskill Hospital, crew members worked in cramped conditions in the boiler room.

As the city expanded, so did PCVAC. The group later moved to a temporary garage on Lower South St. before constructing their current Headquarters around 1969. Today, PCVAC has grown from a one-ambulance operation with around 20 members to one of the largest Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Westchester County. They now operate four ambulances, a Special Operations vehicle, three Officer's vehicles, and an off-road UTV, all while continuing their mission of rendering aid to the sick, injured, and disabled.

PCVAC acknowledges the contributions of their Founding Members and Life Members and honors their past as they celebrate their 60th anniversary, recognizing that without those who came before them, they would not be where they are today.
