Peekskill area under heat wave; safety tips shared.

by Todd Vandersline / Peekskilllocal.org

The Peekskill region is facing a heat wave with temperatures over 90 degrees and feeling like it's over 100 degrees over the next few days.

To stay safe during the heat wave, here are some tips:

1. Stay cool by using air conditioning or fans, wearing light and loose clothing, taking cool showers, and staying in the shade if outdoors.

2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty, and avoiding dehydrating beverages like alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

3. Take care of others by checking on family members and neighbors, and never leaving children or pets in closed vehicles.

4. Prepare your home by covering windows with shades, weather-stripping doors and windows, and using window reflectors to keep the heat out.

5. If working outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Recognize the signs of heat stroke, such as hot and dry skin, shallow breathing, rapid weak pulse, and confusion. Call 911 if you suspect heat stroke and cool the person down while waiting for help to arrive.

Be aware of heat exhaustion symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, and cool, moist, pale skin. Move the person out of the sun and apply cool, wet cloths to their skin.

Never leave children, pets, or people in closed cars, as temperatures can quickly become life-threatening.

The City of Peekskill has opened a cooling center at 4 Nelson Avenue Peekskill, NY 10566, with free WiFi, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm through Friday, for anyone needing a cool place to escape the heat.
