Ocala Police's Drug Amnesty Program Helps Recovering Addicts
Staff Report / ocalalocal.org
Melissa, a participant in the Ocala Police Department's (OPD) Drug Amnesty Program, shared her story of recovery after reaching out for help in 2020. This program was designed to provide individuals struggling with addiction a chance to seek assistance without the risk of legal consequences.
The OPD established the Heroin/Opioid Amnesty Program in 2018 in response to the opioid crisis, aiming to help those addicted to drugs. The initiative ensures that individuals who seek help are checked into a licensed treatment facility at no cost.
Over the past five years, the OPD has responded to more than 1,400 overdose incidents, resulting in 215 fatalities. The amnesty program has seen over 560 participants since its inception.
For those seeking help with addiction, the Ocala Police encourage contacting them at 352-369-7000 for support.
