Staff Report / Daytonalocal.org
Daytona State College held a commemorative event on its Daytona Beach Campus to honor veterans on Veterans Day. The event featured speeches and performances aimed at expressing gratitude for the service of military members.
President Tom LoBasso, a retired Sergeant First Class with the Florida National Guard, reminded attendees of the long tradition of service in the U.S. that dates back nearly 250 years. The event included an invocation by Pastor Craig Robinson, a retired Captain in the U.S. Army, and remarks from Barry Gibson, a retired Major in the U.S. Army.
Guest speaker Bill Harrison, a retired Commander in the U.S. Navy, addressed those present. Musical performances included the Star-Spangled Banner by the DSC Shades of Blue Jazz Choir and "God Bless America" by the Blue Latitude choir. The Presentation of the Colors was conducted by the Embry-Riddle U.S. Army ROTC Color Guard.
Daytona State College has been designated a Purple Star Campus by the Florida Department of Education, recognizing its commitment to veterans and their families. The college also received honors as a 2024 Gold-Level Military Friendly School, a 2024 Military Spouse Friendly School, and was ranked 18th nationwide for Best Online Bachelor’s Program for Veterans by U.S. News & World Report.
