Tampa Detective Joe Nance Remembered for Sacrifice

On October 1, 1939, Detective Joe Nance of the Tampa Police Department passed away following an incident that occurred while he was on duty. While driving to interview a witness in Lakeland, his vehicle was forced off the road by a truck. Detective Nance suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. He ultimately died a few days later due to pneumonia, a complication from his injuries.
Detective Nance holds the distinction of being the department's first black police officer to die in the line of duty. The Tampa Police Department remembers and honors his service and sacrifice.
